Hi! And welcome to Midwest Counseling. My name is Ann Marie Grant. I am a licensed mental health counselor through the State of Iowa. I received my Master degree from University of San Francisco after receiving my Bachelors’ in Psychology, World Religions and Urban Studies.
My work over the past 20+ years has been focused on advocacy and helping those who feel disempowered to find their strength and voice through empowerment. Working with children, adolescents, adults and families, I am witness to others as they learn about their unique and individualized needs to advocate for themselves. My background is eclectic (which only means I draw from different applications or theories) based on client need. I also hold certifications in child and adult Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I strive for a client-centered, strengths-based approach. I believe in the relevance of systems theory and the importance it has on all family members working to improve their quality of life.
I enjoy opportunities to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds performing a range of services. I feel it keeps me in-tune with your individual needs. I would describe myself as an integrative therapist who aims to help you separate yourself from the problems in your life. Together, we will look at the environment you grew up in, and using key pieces of information, you, as the client, can reframe issues and develop goals to solve problems and strengthen and grow individually. I believe that adversity can be used to expand out your comfort area boundaries within yourself. Adding to your toolbox, ways to maintain openness and calm, in approaching any situation.
An old Cherokee told his grandson:
"My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility,
kindness, empathy, and truth."
The boy thought about it, and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?"
The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed.”
Mental health should be as accessible and easy to treat as physical health. Unfortunately we hide what others cannot see and feel shame about pain or dysfunction in the mind. Mental illness is able to be treated and improved upon. It is my job to provide support and guidance to promote meaningful recovery.
